EXCEL TRAINING - SUGGESTED OUTLINES FOR ONE-DAY COURSES

Below are some general suggestions for course content. These are flexible guidelines as each day can be tailored to your precise requirements, and the list of topics is not exhaustive. The exact amount of material covered each day will depend on existing knowledge and familiarity with Excel and Windows of course participants. For the Introductory day it is assumed that participants have little, or no, previous knowledge of Excel, but some familiarity with Windows. The course outlines are quite ambitious, and we may not cover all the topics in one day. For the Intermediate and Advanced courses it is anticipated that the participants are at least familiar with (most of) the contents of the Introductory course.

INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL - 1 Day course

This is an introduction to the basic spreadsheet and charting components of Excel - how to access these, and how to create useful spreadsheets and graphs. Participants will design spreadsheets which include lists and simple calculations; produce basic charts; print spreadsheets, charts, and formulae.

Topics to be covered include as much of the following as possible:
  • Starting Excel; Entering different types of data - numbers, dates, and text; formatting data.
  • Summary of the basic elements of working with list data in Excel - data integrity; good spreadsheet design.
  • Creating, storing, and retrieving spreadsheets; Editing - making changes, correcting mistakes.
  • Linking list data to Word for Mail-merge - letters, envelopes, and labels.
  • Some simple calculations - writing formulae; using the SUM and IF statements.
  • Marking blocks of text. Moving and copying cell contents and formulae.
  • Previewing and printing spreadsheets and formulae.
  • Adding page numbers, headers and footers; adding borders, shading, and colours.
  • Producing, previewing and printing charts.
  • More spreadsheet design concepts - relative and absolute cell references.
  • Using the Toolbar for shortcuts; Getting on-line Help.
INTERMEDIATE EXCEL - 1 day course

Excel has many built-in commands which enable you to manipulate, calculate, and analyse your data. This course builds on material from the earlier "Introduction to Excel". It will introduce more Excel commands and features, particularly those necessary for performing more complex calculations.

Topics to be covered include as much of the following as possible:
  • Review of Introductory Excel course.
  • More advanced calculations with the IF statement.
  • Manipulating two-dimensional lookup tables: using VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP
  • Linking worksheets / workbooks.
  • Designing simple macros - the automatic recording and an introduction to the Visual Basic Editor.
ADVANCED EXCEL - 1 day course

Windows allows you to use more than one spreadsheet or chart (or any other Windows application) at a time, and allows quick and easy transfer of data between these. This course will introduce features for working with several spreadsheets, and will build on material introduced in "Intermediate Excel".

Topics to be covered include as much as possible of the following:
  • Review of the Intermediate course.
  • More advanced data facilities - sorting; criteria tables; selective calculations (filtering/outline).
  • Creating formulae across several spreadsheets/worksheets; copying data across spreadsheets/worksheets.
  • Linking and Consolidating data from several spreadsheets/workbooks; Automatic Subtotals; Pivot Tables.
  • Review of macros and the Visual Basic Editor; introducing more VBA code.
